Four Romantic Valentine's Day Ideas for Outdoorsy Couples

With Valentine’s day right around the corner, you may be wondering how to incorporate the outdoors into your love life. Here are four simple romantic ideas for those outdoorsy couples out there!

Backcountry Dinner Date

Tell your significant other you are taking them for a backcountry dinner (or lunch) date for Valentine’s Day, but tell them what’s on the menu is a surprise. To ensure success, you will need a few key ingredients:

A key destination. Pick a mountain top, a lake, a scenic clearing in the woods, or somewhere with a great view. Choose somewhere that is special to the two of you.

Second, you need to set the scene for romance. Bring some candles or some of those adorable solar string lights. Ensure your partner is comfortable as it is going to be chilly since it is February! Make sure you bring warm clothes and something to sit on like a sleeping pad or camping chair.

Third, you need a yummy meal. Make it special, make it unexpected, and make it something your partner would never think to make on a backpacking stove. Think steamed mussels, steak, lobster, or even Backcountry Chocolate Fondue!

Finally, don’t forget the headlamps. If you stay out for dinner, you are likely heading home in the dark.

Surprise Weekend Getaways

Surprise your partner with an outdoorsy weekend getaway for Valentine’s Day. Ensure they have a clear schedule, pack their bags for them, and then whisk them away for the weekend!

Head out somewhere with plenty of outdoor activities. Book a hotel room in a mountain town or rent a rustic cabin in the woods. Maybe even snowshoe to a remote yurt. Take on all the packing and prep so that your partner does not have to and you all can enjoy the weekend together.

Sunset/Sunrise Hike

What could be more romantic than watching the sunset with the one you love on Valentine’s Day? Go on a sunset hike! (Or a sunrise hike if you are both early birds) Make sure you check the sunset or sunrise times online and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

Don’t forget to confirm that your destination has a good view of the sunrise (facing east) or sunset (facing west). Good places for sunrises and sunsets are beaches, mountain tops, or scenic viewpoints. When going on that hike to catch the view, don’t forget a thermos and a blanket to cozy up together when you reach the destination.

Dinner and a Movie

A classic…and it doesn’t even have to be outside! If you just want to stay inside, do not have time to get out there, or the weather is not the best, you can always count on the simple dinner and a movie option.

You can, however, put a twist on it by choosing an outdoorsy-themed movie on a streaming service such as Netflix, Hulu, or any number of the other platforms out there. Oh, and don’t forget the popcorn!
